Between April 30 and May 20, 2026, a Chongqing factory shipped about 50 tons of goods described as "Game Consoles" to a logistics company in the Netherlands, care of Valve Corporation. Valve had announced nothing. Kotaku ran the story on May 5, and The Verge verified the records.
70 tons of "Game Consoles"
The first lot was ordinary in every way except the consignee. One May 20 shipment alone was 42 packages weighing about 12.5 tons. Then in June it happened again: four shipments on June 10 and five on June 17, each of 42 packages, about 70 tons in all, but roughly half the weight per package. Reporters read that as a different product. Kotaku estimated the first wave at 15,000 or more units.
Nobody inside Valve talked. The supplier name, the weight, the package count and the dates were on a record that a trade-data subscriber can search by company.
Analysts read it as a stock signal
Journalists were late to this. Analysts have used the same records for years to get ahead of announcements and earnings calls.
- OCT 2016 · GOPROA trade-data research note found U.S. drone imports up 230 percent year on year in September, ahead of the Karma drone launch, while GoPro's own seaborne shipments fell 69 percent ahead of its November earnings.
- JUL 2019 · TESLAU.S. electric-vehicle exports to Europe hit a record $588 million, 5.1 times the prior year, which the analysts tied to the imminent Model 3 launch in the EU. Exports leak the same way imports do.
- OCT 2020 · PELOTONPeloton-linked seaborne imports rose 124 percent quarter on quarter to a record in September 2020, while the company was warning customers about delivery delays. Analysts used the number to judge whether the backlog would clear.
Each of those was a public company, so the reading was legal and, from an investor's chair, sensible. The point is that the reading was possible at all.
The rumor that shipped 383,000 units
In March 2025, a games forum post claimed shipping data from a Vietnamese contractor showed 383,000 complete Nintendo Switch 2 units and 41,598 charging grips shipped to North America between January 17 and 22, weeks before Nintendo's reveal. Outlets ran it as a rumor, and we treat it as one. The specific platform behind the data was never identified.
It belongs here for a different reason. Nobody who read the story thought the idea was far-fetched. Shipping records revealing a launch had become a normal kind of news.
Your volume is an earnings call
Most importers are not public companies, and that is the problem. A competitor reading your record gets what an analyst gets from Peloton, a quarterly view of your volume and your suppliers, with no obligation to anyone. The launch, the backlog and the quiet quarter are all visible before you have said a word.
We put a federal confidentiality protection in place for every entity and name you ship under, and we keep watching the platforms after that. What you ship, how much and from whom stops being a story anyone else can run.
